SERIAL PRAWDĘ Ci POWIE - czyli subiektywny przegląd amerykańskich seriali /SERIES SPEAK THE TRUTH – my subjective review of the American series

Tym razem  wyjątkowo nie o filmach, tylko temacie o którym pojawia się ostatnio sporo dyskusji i artykułów – serialach.  Wciągają, uzależniają – oglądając perypetie naszych ulubionych bohaterów czujemy się z nimi związani, czasem nawet na czas oglądania „przenosimy” się w inną rzeczywistość (coś o tym wiem ;)

This time the post won’t be about the movies, but about series. Why? Because nowadays it is hotly debated topic. They are involving and addictive – while watching our favourite heroes we are in a way living their lives; teleporting to the different “reality” (I know something about that ;)

Większość z nas traktuje seriale jako „guilty pleasure” – rozrywkę która niewiele wnosi do naszego życia, jednak poza utrwalaniem języka (to też  moja wymówka ;) mają one także inne zalety.  Jakie? „Serial przestał stanowić domenę znudzonych gospodyń domowych, a zaczął aspirować do funkcji, jaką od XIX wieku pełniły realistyczne powieści” (cytat z czasopisma „Film”).  Amerykańskie seriale (czyli jedne z najbardziej popularnych w Polsce jak i na świecie) przedstawiają problemy globalne ( z którymi się utożsamiamy), a sam serial stał się lustrem, w którym można zobaczyć przemiany społeczne, nowe problemy pokazywane w bardziej odważny sposób niż dotychczas robiła to konserwatywna z natury TV.

Poza tym, serial stał się „cool”. Większość krytyków wskazuje początek tego procesu wraz z 1990 rokiem i premierą „Seinfelda” (historia neurotycznego nowojorskiego komika).

The majority of us probably  treats  watching series as “guilty pleasure”; but apart from learning the language (which is my excuse :) they have other benefits. You will ask: what are they? Well, “series are no longer the domain of the bored housewives, but are aspiring to the function similar to  the 19^th century realistic novels” (“Film” magazine).  American series (the ones most popular in Poland, and Europe) deal with the global problems (with which we identify), and the series became a kind of mirror,  in which we see the social changes; and in which  new dilemmas are  shown more explicitly than more conservative TV.

Apart from that, watching series  became “cool”. Most critics claim the beginning of the process in 1990 and series  “Seinfeld” (the story about neurotic comedian from the NY).

Dekadę później Alan Ball zrealizował wg własnego pomysłu „Sześć stóp pod ziemią” (6 Feet Under); dzisiaj to już klasyk oraz wzór w kwestii obalania mitów i tabu, przełamywania stereotypów oraz mówienia o trudnych kwestiach wprost (depresja, choroby psych., związki homoseksualne, etc). Głównym tematem serialu jest oczywiście śmierć. Bohaterami serialu są członkowie rodziny prowadzącej dom pogrzebowy.

Decade later,  Alan Ball produced (based on his own idea) series  “Six Feet Under” – now it is a classic example of the series dealing with  difficult problems openly (depression, mental problems, homosexual relationships). The plot revolves around… death. The main characters are family running funeral establishment.
